Scope :
During the time period covered by these records, the Solid Waste Division and its predecessor, the Sanitary Operations Department, maintained photograph files documenting the county's solid waste facilities and operations, including waste transfer stations or landfills at Algona, Bow Lake, Cedar Falls, Cedar Hills, Duvall, Enumclaw, First Avenue Northeast, Hobart, Houghton, Northshore, Renton, Stoneway and Vashon. This series is composed of four subseries: (1) Color 35mm transparencies (1965-1978), taken by departmental photographers and maintained by the Solid Waste Division for use in publications, presentations, etc. The images are arranged alphabetically by topic and show the construction and operation of transfer stations, sites under consideration for landfills and transfer stations, and waste management techniques and operations. (2) Color 8"x 8" prints (1980), taken by departmental photographers. Copies of these prints were bound into the division's publication Solid Waste Capital Improvement Program 1981-1986 (King County document collection, no. 1882). The aerial photographs show county landfills and transfer stations, and their surrounding geography. Locator maps and facility descriptions accompany most photographs, which are arranged alphabetically by facility location. (3) Color 3.5" x 5" prints (1986-1987) documenting construction of temporary leachate control mechanisms and a detention pond at the Vashon landfill. The images, originally mounted in an album prepared by Harper/Owes Engineers, (removed; photocopy present), are arranged chronologically. (4) 333 oversized aerials of landfills and transfer stations mounted on foam core and cardboard, dating from 1973 through 2009 and arranged in order of identification number assigned by the agency.
