Reference ID :

Series Date(s) :
(1972-1994)
Begin Date:
1972
End Date:

Level :
Series
Scope :
The Seattle-King County Department of Public Health established the King County Detoxification Center in 1975 following the state of Washington's decriminalization (1972) of public inebriation. Originally providing treatment and shelter to chronic alcoholics, the Center added services to drug abusers in 1981. It continued through 1995 as the Alcohol and Drug Detoxification Program under the department's Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Division. These records consist of subject files maintained by detoxification program administrators as a reference file, primarily for the period 1975-1985. They contain correspondence and memoranda, procedures and protocols, narrative and evaluative reports and studies, lists and rosters, individual documents from various county, state, federal and private sources, articles and photocopied newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous fragmentary records relating to day-to-day program operations. Record material for 1986-1994 is limited to narrative and statistical reports and studies. Records relating to individual clients have been removed. The records as a whole provide partial documentation of the Center's efforts to meet challenges of funding, staffing and facilities while providing for the medical and human needs of a specialized clientele.
